Rug Restoration
Bespoke cleaning for Persian, Oriental and designer rugs — because every rug tells a story
Preserving Artistry, One Fibre at a Time
A beautiful rug can transform a room, providing a sense of place and a feeling of luxury, grandeur, sophistication or warmth. Whether it is a hand-knotted Persian heirloom passed down through generations, a vibrant Oriental piece collected on your travels, or a contemporary designer rug that anchors your living space, the right care ensures it endures for decades to come.
At Namengwe, we approach every rug as a unique work of art. Rugs vary enormously in fibre content, dye type, construction method and origin — no two are identical. That is why we never apply a one-size-fits-all cleaning process. Instead, our experienced technicians develop a tailored wash plan for each rug, selecting the precise combination of techniques and products that will deliver the deepest possible clean while treating the fibres with the utmost gentleness.
Our state-of-the-art, WoolSafe-verified facility in Sydney is purpose-built for rug care. Equipped with custom-designed wash pits, automatic rug washing machines, centrifuge dryers and a climate-controlled drying room, it represents the gold standard in rug cleaning infrastructure. For rugs that cannot be removed from the premises, we also offer a comprehensive on-site cleaning service.
We engage regularly with industry trainers and consultants to stay at the forefront of rug washing technology and developments, ensuring you always receive the best possible result for your investment piece.
Rugs We Specialise In
Persian Rugs
Hand-made for over 2,500 years with techniques passed down through generations, Persian rugs are truly unique. Professional cleaning preserves their intricate patterns and vibrant natural dyes, ensuring they can be treasured — and handed down — for generations to come.
Oriental Rugs
Woven from silk, wool or cotton across a vast region stretching from Morocco to Northern India, Oriental rugs carry deep cultural significance. Our specialists understand the specific requirements of each origin and fibre combination, preventing the damage that improper washing can cause.
Designer Rugs
Modern designer rugs are crafted to last, but only with proper care. Many feature wool, viscose or blended fibres that demand specialist knowledge. We select the right detergents and techniques to maintain their contemporary aesthetic and structural integrity.
Antique & Delicate Rugs
Fragile, aged or museum-quality rugs require the gentlest possible handling. Our hand-cleaning-only process uses minimal agitation and carefully selected pH-neutral products to clean without compromising weakened fibres or fugitive dyes.
The Rug Restoration Journey
An eleven-stage process refined over decades of hands-on experience.
Check-In & Inspection
We confirm measurements, test fibre content and colourfastness, perform UV and moisture tests, and document every spot, stain and area of concern. A full condition report is prepared before any cleaning begins.
Dry Soil Removal
Using automatic strap dusters, walk-behind machines and compressed air, we dislodge all embedded dry soil. The construction of the rug determines which combination of methods we use — the wrong approach can cause damage, which is why we maintain the full range of equipment.
Pre-Soak Treatment
Your rug is placed in a specially designed soak tub with a treatment specific to its fibre, construction and soiling level. Dwell time varies depending on the rug and the severity of contamination.
Pit Wash & Conditioning
In our custom-designed wash pit, the correct pre-conditioning treatment is applied and a series of brushes — manual or machine-operated — work through the fibres. This process is repeated until the water runs completely clear.
Automatic Wash & Rinse
The rug enters our state-of-the-art automatic washing machine where it gently agitates to release the last remaining soiling and odours. A fibre-specific rinse softens, neutralises and aids quicker drying.
Centrifuge & Climate-Controlled Drying
High-speed centrifuge extraction removes up to 95% of moisture. The rug then enters our drying room — equipped with dehumidifiers, HEPA-filtered air, commercial fans and a European heat-and-humidity control system — ensuring optimal drying conditions.
Final Treatments & Hand Grooming
Any remaining difficult stains receive specialist hand-spotting. The rug is then groomed by hand with carefully selected brushes to restore its natural pile direction and lustre. A final moisture test and quality check complete the process before your rug is rolled, packaged and returned to you.
